... a good book on photographic composition? Almost everything in my local library on photography begins with "This is your viewfinder" and ends with framing and the rule of thirds. I'd like to pick up a more advanced book about composition, but don't have a lot to spend on books right now and don't want to buy another dud.
Any suggestions?

Roland Barthes
Camera Lucida: Reflections on photography
I think that composition in general is an implicite theme of this book. Although other views are possible.
it is a fenomenological work. but it is not a scientific writing. I believe you will like it. He was a french semiotician, philosopher and literary scientist/writer.
